{"id":19730,"date":"2020-01-22T17:05:55","date_gmt":"2020-01-22T17:05:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imatsolutions.com\/?p=19730"},"modified":"2020-01-22T17:05:55","modified_gmt":"2020-01-22T17:05:55","slug":"social-determinants-of-health-accelerator-act-gaining-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/imatsolutions.com\/index.php\/2020\/01\/social-determinants-of-health-accelerator-act-gaining-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Determinants of Health Accelerator Act Gaining Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Introduced by a <a href=\"https:\/\/patientengagementhit.com\/news\/bill-proposes-funding-social-determinants-of-health-under-medicaid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bipartisan group<\/a> in Congress in July 2019, the Social Determinants of Health Accelerator Act aims to provide funding and support for state Medicaid agencies working to implement community outreach interventions to address the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH).<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the legislation is to have CMS, HHS, and other federal agencies work to support community-based health programs through a series of $25 million Medicaid grants.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, members of the health leader coalition called <a href=\"http:\/\/aligningforhealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aligning for Health<\/a> sent a<a href=\"http:\/\/aligningforhealth.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/SDAA-Letter-of-Support-House-Jan-2020-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> letter<\/a> to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, stating that the legislation would be a good step forward for community-based care efforts.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, last week, America\u2019s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) <a href=\"https:\/\/healthpayerintelligence.com\/news\/ahip-signs-onto-support-for-social-determinants-accelerator-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">urged<\/a> House leaders to hold a hearing to discuss how the Social Determinants of Health Accelerator Act might help the healthcare industry\u2019s fight against social determinants of health barriers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that the Social Determinants Accelerator Act is a critical step to overcome these challenges and move the ball forward,\u201d the AHIP letter read. \u201cIt will provide state, local and tribal governments with additional capacity and support to incubate innovative strategies \u2013 and the entire nation will benefit from the results of their effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s a breakdown of what the legislation proposes:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Provide federal assistance to state and local governments to build effective health and social services programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Calls on state and local governments to distinguish any federal barriers to addressing Social Determinants of Health.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Establish these policies and strategies while not overlooking vulnerable populations and limiting their access to care.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, this is a sign that SDOH is rising in prominence in the payer arena.
